All second graders Skyped with Kate Messner this week. It was cool that she was exactly like the character, Marty McGuire. She is a tomboy too! She got the idea for the book Marty McGuire from her daughter's recital. When she's writing, she gets her ideas from her writer's notebook. Then she keeps writing and doesn't stop. She spends most of her time revising. It takes a long time to publish a book! Kate Messner was very thoughtful to talk to us! We can't wait to read the new Marty McGuire book called Marty McGuire Has Too Many Pets when it comes out in January!
We have been learning about numbers within 1,000. Earlier this week, we started to make 1,000 grids. This is helping us learn how to count within 1,000, skip count, notice patterns, and soon solve addition and subtraction problems within 1,000. Today we did a Turkey Day Exemplar problem. We had to try to figure out how long to cook stuffed and unstuffed turkeys. We counted by 5s and 10s up to 16 pounds! The students wanted a class picture sharing something they have done...ask them why they are proud of what they chose!
We've been learning about themes and the author's message in fiction. This week we worked in groups to read stories and record our thinking about the beginning, middle, and end and what the author was trying to tell us. In the beginning, we think about how the characters are introduced and the problem. In the end, we think about how the problem is solved and how the actions come to a conclusion. We learned that it doesn't matter if you're small or big, you can still be kind. We think the author's message was to not give up and being brave. We thought the message was just because you know you're good at something, doesn't mean you should stop persisting. We think the message was to not steal, think before you do something. We think the message was things are not more important than people.
