Students loved the interactive math assignment with the question, “Who in your family can jump the highest?” So, we have another similar assignment for this week! It’s called “Guess the Unit”! We’ve been learning to measure in centimeters, meters, inches, feet, and yards. Have someone in your family premeasure 5 objects in your house without telling the student what unit they used! Then, the family member will tell the student what was measured and how wide or tall it was by giving them only the number without the unit. The student’s job is to then guess the unit that was used by thinking about what would make the most sense. Then, the student will measure the object to see if the unit he/she guessed was correct. If not, the student should try another unit until he/she gets the same answer as the family member!
For example:
Parent: “The length of the kitchen table was 5. What unit did I use?”
Student: I think you used feet! (They check with the measuring tape) “Yes, it’s 5 feet!”
After you do this with 5 objects in your household, your comment on our blog should answer the following question: What did you learn about measurement?
